Ferraris for all on road to economic freedom?

A lively debate on whether the West can – and should – bank on continued economic growth is being promised by the Manchester Salon.

With economies listing after the deepest recession since the 1930s, commentators are beginning to question whether growth for growth’s sake is an achievable or desirable goal.

And with China and India set to eclipse America and Western Europe as the dominant markets of the 21st century, the debate will examine where the west’s economic future lies and how the developing world can get to the level of wealth of the developed countries..

Daniel Bel-Ami, author of Ferraris For All: In Defence of Economic Progress, is a journalist specialising in economic and finance and edits a weekly magazine on investments funds. He challenges the notion that the pursuit of growth is bad for the economy and leads to widening inequalities but instead argues that wealth creation can benefit everyone.

Clive George is a senior fellow at Manchester University’s school of environment and development, and will present the counter argument to Daniel Bel-Ami. A widely published author, Clive questions the rhetoric of free markets and free trade as the liberators of society and individuals.

He argues that the era of Western might and influence exerted over the past 300 years is on the decline and now is the time to rethink our models of growth. His recent book, The Truth About Trade: The Real Impact of Liberalisation is recommended reading for policy makers.
