Press Release 21-February-2011 on Future of Journalism |
Press release21-February-2011The future of journalism and publishing onlineThe Manchester Salon is hosting a timely debate on the threats to print journalism with the arrival of social media – and how journalism is taking on new forms in the digital age.
National and regional newspapers have experienced a protracted period of retrenchment recently, and the development of critical and in-depth journalism has been one of the main casualties.
With slashed advertising revenues, declining circulation and a rash of redundancies, regional and national newspapers are struggling to find a new economic model.
Alongside this has been a proliferation of online publishing by individual bloggers and citizen journalist trying to develop new ways of news reporting and commentary.
Leading the debate is Brendan O’Neill, editor of Spiked online and who has also written for the Guardian, Spectator and the British Journalism Review. Brendan will look at the challenges online publishing poses for journalism.
Also speaking will be Louise Bolotin, a former BBC journalist who publishes the website, Inside the M60. Louise will speak about the demands of 24-hour news and the use of social media such as Twitter and Facebook as news platforms.
With the WikiLeaks website being passed and publishing leaked US Embassy cables, its founder Julian Assange has been both vilified and beatified. Some of those who have given material to WikiLeaks in the past have faced long-term imprisonment. But beyond the personalities and witch-hunts, what have we actually learned from these many revelations?
